Tony is scenographer and educator, Tonys professional involvement with theatre and in particular with contemporary Maori theatre productions began in 1994 when he constructed sets for Taki Rua’s inaugural Te Roopu Whakaari season.As a designer and educator his interests lie predominantly in dealing with the local environments and this has provided the contextual framework for the designs for a variety of new New Zealand Productions including Te Karakia and Awhi Tapu by Albie Beltz, And What Remains and Sunset Road by Miria George, Taku Raukura e by Materoa Haenga, The Sojourns Of Boy By Briar Grace Smith and Jo Randerson, and Flat Out Brown by Briar Grace Smith.As well as theatre work Tony also designs for exhibitions and has exhibited both nationally and internationally. Tony first became involved with PQ in 1995 and again as a member of the New Z ealand T heatre Practitioners exhibition ‘Part ’ 2003 and “Blow” in 2007 . Work for 2015 is based on design work for the opera Hohepa by Jenny Mcleod , the first opera to have major elements sung in te reo the indigenous language of Aotearoa /NZ .
